WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Wednesday is the grand opening of the new National Museum of the U.S. Army. Just in time for Veterans Day.
This has been a long time coming, it's the last major branch of the military to get its own national museum. And you'll see artifacts you can't see anywhere else. This has been a long time coming, it's the last major branch of the military to get its own national museum. And you'll see artifacts you can't see anywhere else.
The newest museum at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, is a sprawling, shining tribute to the U.S. Army and its soldiers.

Upon arrival, you walk through the soldier's stories gallery. Pylons with information are etched with individual soldiers' experiences.
Paul Morando, the Chief of Exhibits for the National Museum of United States Army tells us why everyone should check it out.
"They should come to learn about the service and sacrifice of our American soldiers, from 1775 to the present. when they walk through these galleries they connect with the stories, they connect with the artifacts that are on display, they can see a reflection of themselves, and also be able to connect to not only the Army's history, but American history as well," he said.
Morando has spent the last three years painstakingly perfecting the exhibits at this museum. Including a tank, a Cobra King, from the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. One of the most iconic artifacts in the Army.

“This is an original piece from that time period used during the Battle of the Bulge. and what you see behind is a little magic to recreate what it would have looked like, the ice, the snow, the mud, the dirt that was involved during that battle," he said.
And a boat from the Normandy landings, the fact that it's not a replica, will take your breath away.
“It's one of four the original Higgins boats from the Normandy landings, so having that piece in this museum, telling that story of what soldiers did during those landings is truly remarkable," Morando said.
There are artifacts from the Army's early days, including a sword from 1814.

“Francis Scott Key witnessed that battle inspiring him to write our national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner," he added.
And you can see exhibits on the Cold war, the Gulf War, 9-11, and the Army's missions all starting Wednesday. Morando says after so many years of preparation, he can't wait to invite the public, from all walks of life, through the doors.
“Honestly to see the faces of visitors when they walk through the museum, when they look at the work we've done, the exhibits we've put in, the artifacts that have been installed, to see their faces is going to be remarkable. that would give me a lot of joy," Morando explained.
You can get a timed ticket to visit the museum online. You will have to practice social distancing and wear a mask.
ABC7 also goes one on one with the woman in charge of the museum, and her unique background, and why her father is so proud of her achievements.
