“I expect the first shipments to arrive Monday morning.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Defense announced they would begin shipping Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine immediately following its FDA approval in the U.S. on Friday night. The U.S. is starting Covid-19 vaccinations within days after the government approved a shot by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE for emergency use. It also doubled its order for a Moderna Inc. vaccine that’s in the pipeline to 200 million doses. Record U.S. deaths and new cases on Friday underscored the urgency of vaccinations, which are due to arrive at the first administration sites on Monday. New Jersey reported record new cases on Saturday.

Delivering the Covid vaccine is being called the biggest logistical challenge in a generation. It's a global public health event that involves a complex web of shipping and technology where every step matters. CNBC's Frank Holland gives CNBC's "Squawk Box" an inside look at the preparations underway. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi President Donald Trump’s coronavirus vaccine czar said on Sunday that he will meet with President-elect Joe Biden this week to discuss vaccine rollouts expected in the U.S. this month. Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chief advisor of Operation Warp Speed, said in late November that he had not met Biden or had any contact regarding a transition process and vaccine distribution plan. Those comments in November came the day before the Trump administration formally began the transition process after weeks of stonewalling, finally giving the Biden team access to resources and information. Slaoui will be the latest top health official to meet with the Biden team as the transition gets underway. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, agreed to serve as Biden’s chief medical advisor last week and met with the incoming administration. The president-elect has criticized the Trump administration’s vaccine rollout plan and said he’s seen no detailed plan to distribute a vaccine to states. “There is no detailed plan that we’ve seen, anyway, as to how you get the vaccine out of a container, into an injection syringe, into somebody’s arm,” Biden said in Delaware last week. Slaoui pushed back on Biden’s remarks in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning, arguing there is a detailed distribution plan but Biden’s transition team hasn’t yet been fully briefed. Biden said he would mandate masking wearing on all federal property and interstate transportation when sworn in, and would also ask people to wear a mask for 100 days to mitigate the virus’ spread. The U.S. is reporting a weekly average of more than 2,000 coronavirus deaths every day, the worst death toll since the pandemic began, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, as infections surge across the country and record hospitalizations add pressure on the health-care system. Slaoui said he thinks a vaccine will be long lasting, between 2 to 3 years, “prolonging our protection for many years.” In a separate interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Slaoui said he’s confident that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are safe with “no serious adverse side effects” reported from trials. “It’s absolutely vital that everybody take comfort in the fact that we have light at the end of the tunnel, and find the energy in that to continue to wear our masks, distance, wash our hands, pay attention to what we’re doing to make sure we’re there by the spring to benefit from the vaccine,” Slaoui said. The first shipment of vaccines will start the day after the U.S. Food and Drug administration authorizes the vaccine in the U.S., according to Slaoui. The FDA is set to hold hearings on whether or not to authorize the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines later this month. »

Workers start sending the first U.S. shipments of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine, from their manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, following emergency use authorization by the FDA. On Saturday, Gustave Perna, the army general who serves as chief operating officer for Operation Warp Speed, said the first doses of the Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE vaccine will be delivered on Monday. The initial delivery will be completed in all 50 states by Wednesday, he said. Covid Shot Timeline May Slip by a Few Days as Pfizer Shot Nears Gustave Perna, chief operating officer for the Defense Department’s Project Warp Speed.Photographer: Chris Kleponis/Polaris/Bloomberg It’s an enormous, historic undertaking that’s already been been marked by confusion and uncertainty. As late as Friday, some states were saying they weren’t sure how many doses they’ll get. There have also been questions about whether the U.S. has ordered enough shots to meet its ambitious distribution schedule moving into 2021. Perna, dressed in battle fatigues and speaking alone without any preamble from political appointees, compared the moment to D-Day, the Allied invasion of France that marked the turning point in Europe in World War II. “D-Day was the beginning of the end,” he said. “And that’s where we are today.” The Pfizer shot -- and a similar vaccine from Moderna Inc. that is just a week away from a decision on emergency authorization -- will be in short supply initially. Only 2.9 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be delivered in the first shipment, a fraction of what’s needed to vaccinate health-care workers and nursing home residents, who are atop the priority list. Another 2.9 million are being held back to ensure that the second dose, to be given 21 days later, will be available for people who get the first round. Additionally, half a million are being held as an emergency reserve.
